Minnetonka Fireplace Wrapped in Barnwood

Minnetonka Fireplace Wrapped in Barnwood

We covered an old brick fireplace in the basement bedroom of this Minnetonka home with reclaimed barnwood to give it a more modern and updated look. For this project we took 100+ year old oak 2 x 5's and cut them in half which gave us 1 x 5's.  This allowed us to use 1/2 the material we would have otherwise needed, since both sides of the board had the rustic look we wanted for this project.

We prepped the old fireplace by bricking up the opening and then covering the entire fireplace with plywood. The plywood gave us a nice solid surface to nail the reclaimed boards in place.

Prior to installation we applied a product called Rubio Monocoat in the oyster color. Rubio is a natural oil based product that enhanced the grey color of the boards without giving them any sheen. The oil also helps to lock in any dirt or dust in these old boards.

We have a variety of barnwood material for sale that will allow you to acheive the same look as this wrapped fireplace. Check out our online lumberyard.

I like the color of the barn wood wall. Did the Rubio Monocoat finish that you applied change the look a lot or was the wood that color prior to applying the wood finish?

I live in Minneapolis and am thinking about covering a wall in my basement with barn wood. I was planning to apply a matte poly finish, but Rubio you used looks great.

I love the antique look of the wood you used on the wall. It goes great with the edison light fixtures.
